Palmer, AK | Maternity Session | VanTassel Family

After years of testing and patiently waiting, Lindsey and Kyle found out they were expecting. I was beyond excited for them! Lindsay has been my muse since the beginning of my photography career and I’ve known Kyle since he was a little guy. I’ve enjoyed watching them evolve from teenagers in love, to married, to a family with a baby boy. This session was taken in March during one of our Valley windstorms on the flats of the Knik River.

Family Lifestyle | Palmer, Alaska | Engelbrecht

I have been photographing families for six years.   In that time, I have striven to capture real, authentic emotions, as well as those in between moments. And although I own my own business and regularly photograph what matters most to me, I still felt that I didn’t have permission from my clients to capture those non posed, silly, playful, and in between moments that are shared between family members. I felt like the majority still wanted beautifully posed portraits. There are some amazing photographers out there who do that well. But the more settled I get with myself and the wilder my three kids get, beautifully posed images are not who we are. And I know what matters to me, must matter to my clients as well. So from this season on, I am striving to photograph what matters most and that is the connection.

Italy 2015

Many people have asked how my trip went… And here’s how it went down:

Milan 3 nights: It was just our place to sleep. We didn’t get a chance to explore the city because we were too busy taking day trips. Day Trips: Lake Como and Venice, both equally spectacular and totally different!

Florence 2 days: We had no agenda, which was great! We just walked and walked… around every corner was something incredible to look at. We felt more secure there than in Milan.

Tuscany 8 days: I could move there tomorrow, it was that great! I really don’t know how to describe it, but pure perfection! It reminded me so much of where I grew up in N.E. Georgia, but with little villas and mountain top villages with castles.  We met up with a group of Alaskans for a tour of mid-evil Italy. Basically towns that were mostly in their original form from lack of money to keep them growing. Sienna, Pienza, Voltera, Monteriggioni, Montalcino, San Giminiano…

Podere Paugnano an Agricola Biologica (organic farm) in Radicondoli, Tuscany is where we stayed. I didn’t research it before leaving so no preconceived ideas would be formed. It was beyond anything I could of ever hoped for! All the city stuff was great to look at, but this farm stole my heart! It was spread out on many acres up on a hill facing a small valley and the town of Radicondoli on the next hill with its quaint castle tower watching over the Tuscan Valley. This farm produced sheep cheese and olive oil. Since it took me until the end of our trip to switch to Italian time I woke before dawn every morning to hear the sheep being moved to the field below our house. Some had bells around their necks and it sounded like wooden wind chimes and very relaxing! Every morning at 8:30 we sat down family style to a breakfast of coffee with steamed sheep’s milk, fresh bread with butter and local honey, fresh sheep yogurt with granola and an assortment of jams, fresh fruit (figs) and fresh scrambled eggs with olive oil. After breakfast we would leave on our tour to discover a new town. Every night we would come back to the farm for a delicious family style meal cooked by the matron of the household, Giovanna. She and her husband Giovanni and their daughters Tamara and Natalie were very welcoming and generous hosts. Natalie and Tamara spoke English and with their translations and lots of hand gestures we all carried on quite nicely!

I know you want to get to the pictures so I’ll stop rambling on… Enjoy!

Killian and Amanda met in Dutch Harbor at church. She is a massage therapist and he was raised in Dutch Harbor and works as a longshoreman mechanic. Antoinette Collins Photography and I had so much fun photographing these two on her Grandparent’s residence in Wasilla. Watching them interact, laughing and joking the whole time was a blast for us. Handmade, Repurposed & Foraged | Palmer, Alaska | Styled Shoot

Styled bridal shoots are my favorite because it allows me to show brides how to think outside the box and keep it simple when it comes to planning for their wedding. This whole look was handmade, repurposed and foraged all under $35.

Handmade: I spotted the material for this dress last winter at JoAnn’s. I instantly fell in love, but I refused to pay $20/yd for it. So I waited a good six months and finally found it on sale. Yay!! I knew that I wanted to create a wedding dress for a styled shoot, but didn’t really know where to start… I stared at it most of the summer until one day an idea arose. I jumped up, grabbed my scissors, plugged in my sewing machine and went for it! I folded the material (like a tube), sewed one side together leaving room for a leg slit and an arm hole, cut the other arm hole and stitched the shoulders. This was a tulle material with sequin overlay so I didn’t have to worry about fraying… And WaLa, a beautiful custom dress!

Repurposed: I had thrifted another wedding dress a couple years ago and wasn’t excited about the style, so I’ve been taking it apart piece by piece to use for different shoots. For this shoot I used the rhinestone and sequin sash from the old dress to create a waist line for the tube dress. It was exactly what tied the whole outfit together! The fur collar was a piece from Celestia’s mom. And lastly, the ribbon for the bouquet was a brown satin ribbon from a gift I had received in years back rolled up in my closet just waiting for it’s time to shine.

Foraged: I had contacted one of my favorite florists, Bloomsbury Blooms (last minute) to see if she were available for collaboration. She was swamped that weekend with other weddings but said to keep her in mind in the future. Will Do! So after taking a walk around my neighborhood and contemplating on all the Fall foliage I decided to go with willow branches. They wouldn’t steal the spotlight, but would add to the simple and natural aesthetic I was trying to achieve.

Model: Celestia

Location: Knik River Road, Palmer, AK

Enjoy!

Rylee | Senior Shoot | Hatcher Pass | Part 2

Rylee and her mom Daun came to me in early April to inquire about Senior photos. They had seen my past creative fashion shoots and wanted to know if I would be interested in doing a Cinderella themed shoot for Rylee in Hatcher Pass and maybe making the dress. Absolutely! No need to beg or ask me twice ;D I was in 100%! I will have to add though, that I am NOT a seamstress, but I can piece material together to make it work for creative photoshoots ;D

…Thus began my vision for the DREAM SESSIONS!…

So we tossed around ideas, bought material several times at JoAnn’s before finding the perfect combo and added some vintage lace cap sleeves from another thrifted dress. She was wanting simple, classic and most of all wanting to feel like a beautiful princess. I played around with ideas all summer before taking the leap on the sewing machine. After a couple of days I had it all stitched up and ready for the big day.

When the big day arrived we started up to Hatcher Pass in the rain. The one thing I’ve learned about shooting in AK is not to reschedule your shoots (unless there are small children involved) because 75% of the time it will either clear up or be sunny 5 miles down the road. However, this was not one of those days… We shot anyways just for the sake of good pictures (I prefer shooting on cloudy days and don’t mind at all to shoot in the rain), but we ended up calling this one. It was way too cold and we decided to continue another day… And I’m glad we did because the second set is just as stunning!
